I love a Climate Change Bill with Bite - 80% reduction in CO2 emissions

Ask your MP to support an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions
CPRE is a member of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition campaigning on the Climate Change Bill. The Bill is being debated in Parliament, and will become law this summer.

Top scientists say the Bill should set a higher target to reduce UK Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions. The target should be to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% from 1990 levels by 2050, and should include the UK’s international aviation and shipping emissions.

Help us get a stronger Climate Change Bill by sending a letter to your MP and asking them to sign an Early Day Motion which calls for the 80% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Tomorrow’s England
Encourage your CPRE branch to support the launch of Tomorrow’s England regional reports on climate change impacts. We’ll need your help to work with local media to encourage local action to halt climate change.

Practical actions you can take to make your contribution to tackling global warming.

1. Buy local foods
Buy local foods and encourage supermarkets to stock them, to help reduce food miles and support local farmers in conserving countryside character.

2. Fly and drive less!
Try to fly and drive less, walk or cycle for short journeys.
A London to Florida return flight in a Boeing 747 has the same climate change effects per passenger as a standard car during its average annual 12,000 mile use.

3. Consider a holiday in England
Consider a holiday in England's beautiful countryside instead of flying overseas.

4. Reduce energy use at home
Insulate your loft, and cavity wall, double-glaze your windows; and buy low-energy light bulbs (grants are available for people over 60). Switch off lights and electrical appliances when you don’t need them. Turn down the thermostat by one degree, and wear an extra layer.

5. Generate low-carbon energy

Consider generating low-carbon or renewable energy, for example by using ground source heat pumps or solar water heaters in your own home.

To work out how much carbon dioxide you generate, try using the ‘carbon calculator’ on either of these websites:
> Resurgence website: carbon calulator
> RSA Carbon Ltd

To find out more about how to reduce your energy consumption, what kind of renewable technologies might suit your needs and where you could buy them, contact:
