What you can do

Take action
Write to your local MP, or email them and ask them to support our call for better planning policies for quarrying
> You can find the name of your MP and email them using the web form on the theyworkforyou website.

Respond to your minerals local plan
County councils and unitary authorities prepare forward plans containing policies for mineral working. These are reviewed periodically. The next time your minerals local plan is being reviewed, you can help to ensure it is environmentally sound by:

  • commenting in writing on policies at all the draft stages and attending the inquiry into the plan to press your case
  • analysing carefully the selection procedures put forward in plans for where and at what rate mineral working should take place
  • putting forward alternatives that protect the environment more efficiently, giving clear reasons for your views

Campaign for the wise use of minerals
You could encourage the recycling of minerals and the products made from them wherever this is feasible, particularly with road surfaces and demolition and construction wastes. Ask major construction firms and developers building in your area – or planning to build in it – what they are doing to use recycled materials for aggregates instead of digging up the countryside.
