Green Belts help us all

Regardless of whether you live in the city or the countryside, in a town surrounded by Green Belt or not, the Green Belts in this country are helping you.

They prevent sprawling of towns and cities
Without Green Belts, Birmingham may well have merged with Coventry by now and swallowed up Kidderminster and Lichfield; London could  have sprawled to the South coast, engulfing Brighton.

They make our cities better places to live
Green Belts encourage planners to identify land within a city that might otherwise have been neglected and to make good use of urban regeneration options. We benefit from both the regeneration of our towns and of course the protection of our valuable open countryside.

They give us somewhere to enjoy the countryside
The large majority of people in England live in towns and cities. It's not always easy for city people to get to the countryside. Green Belts, with their public rights of way, offer people opportunities to walk, cycle and have picnics in open countryside and enjoy the fresh air.

They foster a sense of place
Green Belts mark the end of a town or city. Boundaries are important for helping to maintain local distinctiveness and countryside character.

Green Belts give us food
A great deal of our food is grown in Green Belt.
