Greening the city - progressive planning can create green public urban spaces to which people naturally gravitate.
Good land-use planning is the unsung hero of environmental protection and has always been one of CPRE's top campaigning priorities. Good planning can help slow the growth in road traffic, encourage urban regeneration, curb urban sprawl, protect the beauty and tranquillity of the countryside and safeguard wildlife habitats.
Planning Bill
In May 2007 the Government published its Planning White Paper, with its strong economic bias we fear it will make it quicker and easier to develop Major Infrastructure Projects, large supermarkets and housing estates on green field land.
CPRE will be working hard over the consultation period – which closes in less than three months – to get a stronger environmental emphasis into the final Planning Bill.

Debating the future of land use
In March 2007, David Miliband gave a speech on his vision for land use in England. We had a good response from our members and the public, who joined the debate, posting comments on the CPRE Debates blog. Green Belts
Green Belts keep the city in the city. Green Belt is countryside next to urban areas where there is a risk that the openness will be invaded by urban sprawl. Green Belts are being nibbled away. Houses, roads, airports, universities, sports venues, parking lots and more are being built on Green Belt land.
