Take action

Fly less
If we all flew less, there'd be no need for the massive expansion in aviation which the Government is backing. So consider the alternatives:

1. Holiday locally: England has some beautiful countryside (well we would say that wouldn’t we?) and domestic tourism supports parts of the rural economy that other spending does not reach.
2. Enjoy your journey – overland: Try traveling overland by train, bus and ferry, at least in one direction. It can be fascinating seeing how countryside, food, customs and people change gradually as you travel across a continent.
3. Mix n match: Take the easy part of your journey by train, e.g. take the train to fly from Paris or Amsterdam.
4. Fewer for longer: Travel long distance fewer times but for longer: see if you can get your employer to adopt an unpaid sabbatical policy or take trips in between jobs. You learn more from longer trips than from short ones.
5. Don’t upgrade your footprint: Flying first class more than doubles your carbon footprint: if you want luxury, upgrade your hotel instead.

Reduce air freight

Air freight is increasing even faster than air passengers.  While some shops now label air freighted food, it is difficult to find out whether other products have been flown.  Try to eat more seasonal local food and shop at smaller shops.
