Communities in Four Marks and Medstead have been getting on their bikes this summer with a little help from CPRE Hampshire.

The branch piloted a sustainable transport scheme that made three electric bikes available for residents to borrow.

‘The pilot has been a great success, with local people giving up their cars to take to the roads on the loaned bikes,’ says scheme leader Camilla Swiderska. ‘Their battery power makes them ideal for journeys in this very hilly part of Hampshire!’

The trial ended this month and its results will be fed into CPRE’s Transport Toolkit, due this autumn, which aims to help people organize sustainable local transport projects in their areas. The Hampshire branch hopes to build on the success of its trial and is investigating the possibility of similar bike schemes within the South Downs National Park.
