Sussex: Defending the South Downs

The South Downs may be the newest of our National Parks, but it still requires vigorous defending from developers.

Campaigners co-ordinated by CPRE Sussex were celebrating this summer after a proposal by Pelham Homes to build 500 houses on a Greenfield site by the Downs was scuppered. The planned development near Polegate, which was blocked by Secretary of State Eric Pickles, would have left homeowners cut off from the local town centre and transport links by the busy A27.

Stuart Meier, Director of CPRE Sussex, said: ‘Working with the Campaign for Better Transport, South Downs Society, the Folkington Estate, local councils and residents, we demonstrated just how bad this plan was. We are delighted it has been firmly kicked out because it would have had horrendous consequences for the countryside, the Downs, the local people and, not least, the proposed residents.’
