House-building focus: CPRE response

3 October 2016

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid announced three key initiatives to the Conservative Party conference today (3 October):

  1. £3billion homebuilders’ fund to get at least 225,000 homes delivered, with a focus on increasing delivery by SMEs and custom/self-builders.
  2. Pilot scheme for accelerated construction on public land – getting public sector landowners into partnership with builders, using innovative methods such as off-site construction leading to 15,000 new homes by 2021.
  3. Package to encourage urban regeneration and brownfield development, leading to high quality homes and increasing density around stations.

‘The homebuilders’ fund is good news, especially its focus on small and medium-sized builders,’ said Matt Thomson, CPRE head of planning. ‘However, we’d like to see much more ambition in accelerating construction on public land given the amount of such land that’s available.

‘We’d also like to hear more about how we restrict greenfield development to drive the brownfield development that both CPRE and the Government want to encourage.’
