CPRE comment on Greener UK manifesto launch

22 February 2017

The Greener UK coalition of 13 major environmental organisations, including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, has today launched its manifesto calling on the UK Government to restore and enhance the environment as part of its plans for leaving the European Union.

Erica Popplewell, head of government and rural affairs at the Campaign to Protect Rural England, said:

“Brexit is a chance for the Government to consider what it wants the future of our countryside to look like. Retaining EU environmental regulations is a positive step, but now is the time for a more ambitious commitment to improving the condition of our natural environment. The Greener UK manifesto sets out the steps needed for a future in which people and nature thrive.

“One way Government can best use the opportunities presented by Brexit is to adopt a funding system that rewards farmers for delivering a range of benefits for society: restoring nature and its abundant wildlife, regenerating soils, reducing flooding and protecting valued agricultural landscapes.”
