CPRE has today condemned the Cabinet’s backing for controversial plans to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

The transport secretary, Chris Grayling, confirmed today in a statement to the House of Commons that the Government would proceed with plans to expand the UK’s busiest airport.

The construction of a third runway will significantly increase noise and air pollution for those that live near Heathrow, and dent the UK’s chances of meeting its carbon emission reductions targets.

Daniel Carey-Dawes, senior infrastructure campaigner at the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) said:

‘Today’s announcement on a third runway will come at a terrible price for local communities as well as the environment as a whole. The local impacts will be considerable with communities suffering the blight of noise and pollution on a daily basis.

‘More broadly, further aviation expansion only serves to weaken our chances of avoiding catastrophic climate change.

‘If the Government is serious about rebalancing the economy and cutting carbon, we need to make more efficient use of existing regional capacity and not keep stoking the fire of an already overheating South-East.’
