New 20:26 Vision

What future for the countryside?

CPRE is looking to the future and our 20:26 Vision sets out a thought-provoking picture of the sort of countryside we might see, and some of the challenges it may face, in 2026, CPRE’s centenary year. Our ambition is to provoke a national debate that will lead to a consensus on how we can all protect the green spaces that make England beautiful.

Natural England One Year On

An assessment by CPRE of Natural England's first year

Our report on Natural England one year on, finds it has made progress but still has a long way to go in becoming an effective champion to protect the future of our countryside. We’ve found that Natural England has worked well on getting funding for farmers to protect landscape features and wildlife but it needs to do more at a strategic level including better support for the planning system.

Special offer The Cluttered Countryside
This full colour illustrated booklet is essential reading for all interested in preventing the suburbanisation of our rural areas and in safeguarding the beauty of the countryside. The Cluttered Countryside explores a wide range of small-scale developments – road-signs, advertisements, caravans, telecommunications masts, farm sheds, pylons and power lines – which together can have a highly damaging impact on the quality of the rural environment. A comprehensive list of recommendations targeted at national Government, local-planning authorities, highways authorities and the private sector, indicates how we can free the countryside from unnecessary clutter.

Preparing a Community Landscape Character Statement

Unlocking the landscape is designed to put landscape character at the the heart of the local planning system. The comprehensive toolkit can help you prepare a Community Landscape Character Statement, a new process we have developed to give local communities a say in the future of their local countryside. Local knowledge and aspirations are a central part of this process, but recorded information must be compatible with the planning process. The pack includes guidance, a sample statement and a MAC/PC compatible CD-ROM.
