Help us tackle countryside traffic

Alarming facts

  • Traffic on our minor rural roads has increased by 17% since 2001
  • Almost two thirds of road fatalities occur on rural roads
  • More rural buses and local services are being lost
  • Road expansion threatens thousands of acres of our countryside

The countryside is being lost to more roads and traffic
The things we love about the countryside, the beautiful scenery and the peace and quiet are being eroded by increasing traffic and noise on our country roads. But with your help you can help us reclaim the countryside for people, helping to making our roads quieter and safer, and helping us stop unsustainable road building which is destroying our beautiful landscapes.

What we are doing to reclaim our countryside

20mph rural roadMaking roads safer for people
We are pushing the Government to make it easier to cut traffic speeds on rural roads to make them safer for all road users including walkers, cyclists and horse riders. At the moment lowering speed limits requires forests of traffic signs to be planted.

Our campaigns to stop damaging road schemes include the proposed Westbury eastern bypass in Wiltshire, which would harm the landscape viewed from the famous Westbury White Horse. Recently we won a campaign against the Mottram-Tintwistle bypass, which would have destroyed part of the Peak District National Park and the Manchester Green Belt.

We are pressing national, regional and local government bodies to switch investment from road building to public transport. For example, we are campaigning hard for more secure long-term funding for rural buses rather than just short term ‘kick start’ funds, and for innovative rural transport solutions such as shared taxi schemes.
> Rural public transport - room for improvement

Roadside clutterProtecting the character of country roads
We are pressing the case for reducing the clutter of roads signs in rural areas. Rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach we want to see locally distinctive features and natural features such as hedges, gateways and stone walls to calm traffic and reduce speeds.
