Mapping tranquillity helps to protect it

We commissioned a survey to establish which are the qualities people value most in the English countryside – and nearly three-quarters (72%) said that tranquillity topped the list.

Following this, we worked with university researchers to map the tranquillity levels of all areas across England, using a rigourous set of indicators to measure tranquillity.

The evidence that tranquillity is extremely important to the majority of people and our ability to measure it methodically have backed up our campaign to protect tranquillity in England.

The tranquillity maps make it possible to create policies and take decisions about land use to protect and enhance tranquillity and confidently monitor how well the policies are working. They should be used nationally and locally to make tranquillity a part of all strategies and assessments.
