At a time when we need to be reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we are still tearing up the landscape in order to dig out new coal. Yet we’re not even using the coal that we have, because natural gas has become a cheaper option.

CPRE groups around England are campaigning against proposals for new opencast mines. Some of these are in Green Belt areas, Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They have brought detailed evidence to a number of inquiries.
