CPRE, the countryside charity, welcomes the new Labour leader

4 April 2020

Responding to the results of the Labour leadership election, Crispin Truman, chief executive of CPRE, the countryside charity, said:

‘As the government continues to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, we know we’ll need a huge effort from everyone to rebuild a safer, healthier and more resilient society. It’s critical that we have a strong Opposition to do this and we welcome Sir Keir Starmer as the new Leader of the Labour Party. Now, more than ever, rural communities need support, whether that is to remain connected through high-speed broadband and reliable public transport, or to shore up the rural economy with support for small, local businesses. And as we emerge from the coronavirus crisis, decarbonising the UK’s economy must form a core part of our economic recovery.

‘This health crisis has reminded us how precious our green spaces and countryside are to our health and wellbeing. That’s why we must tackle the climate emergency to protect and enhance these spaces for generations to come. We look forward to working with Sir Keir and his front bench to hold the government to account and make this a reality.’
