Projects and Partnerships in Norfolk
Lisa Ashbury is a trustee for CPRE Norfolk, working on marketing and brand strategy. She plays a vital role in connecting with wider audiences and helping them to be a part of CPRE’s mission. In particular, Lisa aims to bring younger voices into conversations around the countryside, as they play such an important part in its future. She brings a wealth of expertise as a trustee, supporting CPRE Norfolk’s work to protect the local and national countryside. Here Lisa tells us what led her to become a trustee and what she’s been up to so far.
I grew up in the wilds of the north of Scotland, with what I can only describe as a slightly feral childhood! I was left to roam, explore, and discover nature for myself, and it gave me a deep-rooted love of the outdoors. That sense of freedom and my need to find out – ‘what is this?’ or ‘why does that happen?’ – has stayed with me ever since.
The countryside is where I feel most at home – whether it’s skies full of stars (I did want to be an astronaut until I was 12), fields shifting through the seasons (I have a secret passion for tractors!), or just walking along the rivers and hedgerows. It’s so important to me that everyone has the chance to experience that same magic, whatever their age.

Becoming a Trustee
After studying Marine & Environmental Biology at university, I couldn’t find work in that field and retrained as a Draughtsman. But outside of work, you couldn’t keep me indoors. When I moved to Norfolk over nine years ago, I fell in love with the county immediately – I had first come here on holiday with my husband, who had childhood memories of visiting for family holidays, and I knew straight away this was where I wanted to live.
Since moving to Norfolk, I’ve thrown myself into local life, getting involved with village committees and charities. When I saw the opportunity to join CPRE Norfolk, I knew I had to apply. I was nervous, because I wanted it so much, but I felt my passion for the countryside and my skills in communications and marketing could really contribute.
What’s involved
Trusteeship is a busy and varied role! I get to work on everything from blog writing and social media to creating campaigns and storyboards for events. I help with fundraising, paid media, and finding new ways to engage people of all ages with Norfolk’s countryside.
Whether that’s developing awards for schools, planning exhibitions, or building relationships with local projects like Martha’s Meadow. And, of course, I love working alongside such a knowledgeable, supportive team.
As a trustee, I’ve learned that passion really counts. You don’t have to be the expert in everything (and I am certainly not!). You just need to care deeply, be willing to learn, and be part of a team. I’ve also learned how powerful it is when people from different backgrounds bring their skills together. That mix of knowledge, energy, and creativity is what makes CPRE Norfolk such a special charity to be part of.

Projects & Partnerships
I’m particularly proud of our new Youth Engagement & Schools Awards, and the partnership with Martha’s Meadow. The awards are the first time we’ve asked schools to get involved directly, and I’m excited to see their projects come in ahead of judging next July.
At Martha’s Meadow, we hosted a creative day this year that brought people together in a wonderful natural space, and we’re already planning next year’s local craft, food and ‘everything Norfolk’ show there. I’m also proud of the ongoing work we’re doing to keep CPRE Norfolk’s voice fresh, inspiring, and connected, whether through campaigns, blogs, or exhibitions.
The future of CPRE Norfolk
I’m excited about the energy and ambition we have right now. From ‘The Great Mega Solar Exhibition’ in November to the growth of our schools and youth work, there’s such momentum.
And I’m hopeful that through fundraising and creative events, we can build the resources we need to continue protecting Norfolk’s landscapes and inspiring people to care about them.
Thinking about trusteeship with CPRE?
I’d say go for it. If you love the countryside and want to make a difference, this is such a rewarding way to do it. Don’t be put off by thinking you need all the answers. Your enthusiasm and your skills, whatever they are, will be valued. You’ll be part of a team that’s welcoming, supportive, and full of ideas, and you’ll find huge satisfaction in knowing you’re helping to safeguard the countryside for generations to come.
