PLACE TO EXPLORE: Climb Roundway Hill

Geraldine White from CPRE Wiltshire recommends Roundway Down, an Iron Age hillfort on the outskirts of Devizes, visible for miles across the surrounding chalk downland.

A circular walk takes you over the top of the down and into the shade of the adjacent covert, with some of Wiltshire’s best summer views from the top. It’s well used by locals throughout the year.

LOCAL SECRET: Discover chalk streams at Broad Chalke

Wiltshire is home to some of the rarest chalk streams in the world, fed by ancient underground aquifers. In the chocolate-box village of Broad Chalke, in the Chalke Valley near Salisbury, one flows clear through the centre of the village.
