LOCAL TRADITION: Save a village phone box (Rutland and Lincolnshire)
Ron Simpson BEM, Chair of CPRE Rutland and Lincolnshire, recommends looking twice at the red telephone box in your nearest village. To mark its centenary year, CPRE Rutland and Lincolnshire is helping restore up to five heritage phone boxes across the two counties, working with the Community Heartbeat Trust, a charity that has adopted thousands of decommissioned boxes nationwide and repurposed many for defibrillators. Communities can apply for funding towards restoring their local box and finding it a new use, whether that’s a defibrillator, a book exchange or something the village dreams up itself. Even the most ordinary fixtures of village life, easy to walk past without a second glance, can become something a community rallies around and gives new life to.
