LOCAL SECRET: Find the chapel in the corn

Tom Foakes, Director of Suffolk Preservation Society, recommends St Stephen’s Chapel, standing alone among fields outside Bures.

This tiny chapel has an extraordinary story. Local tradition holds that this secluded hilltop was where Edmund, King of East Anglia and later St Edmund, was crowned in 855. The chapel standing here today dates from the 13th century and has since served as a barn, hospital, school and cottages before being restored in the 20th century.
