Local tranquillity scores

Below are the average tranquillity scores for the county councils, unitary authorities and largest conurbations of England, in rank order. The figure given is the average across all of the 500 metre by 500 metre squares within each area. The scores range from positive numbers (where factors which make countryside visitors feel tranquil predominate) to negative (where factors which detract from feelings of tranquillity predominate).

As for England’s nine regions, their rank order is: the North East (most tranquil – mean score 15.3) followed by Yorkshire and the Humber (4.16), South West (1.28), the North West (-1.92), East of England (-3.27), East Midlands
(-4.12), South East (-9.12), West Midlands (-9.66), London
(-76.7 – and the lowest scoring). If London is combined with the South East this region has the lowest score.
