Green Belt anniversary letter

31 July 2015

CPRE President Andrew Motion and other well known supporters of the Green Belt marked the 60th anniversary of it becoming Government policy by writing to The Times to show their backing for CPRE's Our Green Belt campaign:

"On this day in 1955 Green Belts became government policy; 60 years on, we are in serious danger of fatally undermining them, and condemning future generations to urban sprawl. England’s 14 Green Belts provide green space and fresh air for 30 million people, and play a vital role in storing carbon and reducing the risk of flooding in urban areas. They contain some of our best quality farmland and a fifth of our ancient woodland, and have helped transform neglected sites into nature reserves or community forests.

"Green Belts are also vital for our cities, keeping them compact and economically vibrant by encouraging urban regeneration. With suitable brownfield land for at least a million new homes lying neglected, urban regeneration is undermined by plans to build 225,000 homes on the Green Belt. An Ipsos poll for CPRE, published today, shows that just one in six people supports the release of Green Belt land for development.

"When Duncan Sandys MP introduced the national Green Belt policy, he declared that ‘for the wellbeing of our people and for the preservation of the countryside, we have a clear duty to do all we can to prevent the further unrestricted sprawl of the great cities’. We believe that duty remains as important today as it was then, and that is why we are supporting CPRE’s Our Green Belt campaign."
