The London Tree Ring

Growth Team and Elms, London Tree Ring.

A living green corridor being planted around the edge of the capital

Imagine a continuous belt of woodland, orchards and hedgerows encircling the whole of Greater London – connecting existing green spaces, creating new habitat, and reaching into the most nature-deprived communities through greened walking and cycling routes. That is the vision behind the London Tree Ring: a 25-year project to transform the edge of the capital into a living green corridor for people and wildlife alike.

Led by CPRE London, the project brings together a steering group that includes the Woodland Trust, Trees for Cities, TCV, Common Nature, Thames Chase Community Forest, the Forestry Commission, Green Space Information for Greater London and the Greater London Authority.

Progress is already visible on the ground: 2026 saw the creation of 12 new demonstrator projects at locations across London and the planting on our 10,000th tree. Over 200 potential woodland creation sites have been identified by communities and ecologists; and the London Urban Forest Plan now incorporates the priority segment linking Epping Forest to Hainault Forest. Common Nature is working to bring new sites into community ownership, and through the consortium we are actively exploring purchasing and long-term leasing options along the ring.

'Through the London Tree Ring, we are delivering positive outcomes for people, nature and the Capital, empowering Londoners to connect with us in creating a superhighway for nature. From promoting inclusion, skills and green careers to species conservation, woodland preservation, diversification and habitat connectivity, the project offer many benefits alongside our vision for a thriving, resilient and protected Green Belt.'
Phil Paulo, Director of the London Tree Ring

Getting demonstrator sites over the line is the immediate priority – each one builds momentum and shows what the ring can become. Over the next 25 years, the vision is for a living green infrastructure that transforms what it means to live on the edge of London.
