As part of our centenary celebrations, CPRE is delighted to announce the publication of ‘Protecting the Countryside’, a new book by Professor Matthew Kelly, exploring our first 100 years.

Published by Little Toller Books, ‘Protecting the Countryside’ tells the story of CPRE’s century-long campaign to stand up for England’s countryside.

Drawing on extensive research, it explores the people, ideas and movements that have shaped both CPRE and the landscapes we cherish today; while also looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the next century.

To mark the launch, we hosted a special reception and lecture with Professor Kelly, bringing together supporters, partners and friends of CPRE.

The event reflected on CPRE’s history, from our role in helping secure National Parks and Green Belts to our ongoing work to ensure the countryside remains a thriving place for people and nature.

In a foreword to the book, CPRE’s chair Simon Murray writes:

‘From the beginning CPRE understood that ordinary countryside matters: the fields beyond the village, the hedgerows along a lane, the footpaths where people walk and cyclists ride.’

As we enter our second century, this book offers a timely reminder of what has been achieved and why protecting England’s countryside remains as important as ever.
