Rooftop solar must lead clean energy push

Ed Miliband has set out the government’s latest plans to accelerate the UK’s transition to clean energy, outlining proposals to expand solar power and speed up grid infrastructure in a recent speech.

CPRE has welcomed Ed Miliband’s renewed focus on clean energy, while warning that reforms must not come at the expense of the countryside.

However, concerns remain over proposals to fast-track major grid infrastructure through sweeping changes to the planning system. This could allow large developments to bypass proper scrutiny, risking further loss of countryside.

Public support for stronger protections is clear. A recent poll found that 86% of Britons want the countryside to be better protected than it is today.

While urgent action on climate change is essential, it must not come at the cost of the landscapes and communities that will live with these changes for generations.
