Simon Murray elected as new Chair of CPRE
25 June 2020
CPRE has welcomed a new Chair, former National Trust Director Simon Murray.
Simon has a longstanding involvement with the charity and is Chair of CPRE in the Forest of Dean. He has many years’ experience working at board level, most recently at the National Trust, where he was Chief Operating Officer and Senior Director until his retirement in 2019.
Recently he has been lecturing and advising governments and organisations overseas while still remaining committed to local issues in his native Gloucestershire where he is a trustee of several local charities. Simon is especially keen to find new ways to encourage young people to enjoy and care for our countryside heritage.
Simon Murray said:
‘I’m looking forward to being part of CPRE the countryside charity’s exciting new journey. Today we need CPRE more than ever. The climate crisis and unprecedented development pressure threaten the spirit and character of our countryside. The coronavirus pandemic has made us realise how essential our countryside and the green spaces near where we live are for our well-being. CPRE’s new strategy recognises that by caring for the countryside, we care for ourselves. We need to raise our collective voice for the countryside and rural communities.’
Crispin Truman, CPRE’s Chief Executive, said:
‘We’re delighted to have Simon on board, and look forward to harnessing the energy and enthusiasm he brings. He is the perfect fit at a time when we are calling for a regeneration of our countryside.’
Simon Murray was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees for CPRE at the charity’s Annual General Meeting on 24 June 2020.
CPRE is extremely grateful for the tireless work of the charity’s former chair, Su Sayer, who is stepping down after a six-year term. Su has successfully led CPRE through a period of change, a review of purpose and a rebranding.
