Katie's insight into Parliament

My time as Parliamentary Intern at CPRE has been thoroughly enjoyable and has provided invaluable experience.

During my three months of volunteering at the National Office, I have gained insight into a range of issues that CPRE are involved in from Local Foods to the NPPF. The work has been varied and interesting and I have been given real responsibility. Most notably I produced Parliamentary News, a newsletter round-up of CPRE’s work that is sent to MPs and Peers and I also helped to organise an event that was held in the House of Commons. Attending this was in itself exciting, as I had never visited Parliament before and I was able to meet a number of influential policy contacts and MPs.

Everyone at CPRE has been warm, friendly and welcoming, and many took the time to introduce me to their particular area of work, from policy to fundraising to communications. I now have a much deeper awareness of how a campaigning NGO operates and in particular the interaction with the political system. Despite being an intern I was always made to feel part of the team, being included in ongoing research projects, events and internal and external meetings. This was very much appreciated and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

There is no better way to learn than by doing and this internship provided a brilliant environment in which to develop my professional skills. Through it I have amassed a range of relevant experience on which to draw and I feel far better equipped for the ever competitive job market. I also feel that I have contributed (if only in a small way) to CPREs important work in ensuring our countryside is protected and appreciated. Being able to make a difference, however small, as an intern is rare but extremely rewarding and I would thoroughly recommend an internship at CPRE.
