The British countryside. Evolved over thousands of years by the activities of man and the development of farming.

Few habitats remain untouched by human influence. Indeed, one of the largest semi-natural habitats in the whole of the country is man-made. The modest hedgerow.

I’m a hedgelayer so I find it fascinating. Every hedge is different.

506,000 miles in length, nearly 20 times the circumference of the Earth, criss-crossing the landscape like a stitching in a giant patchwork quilt. Combined, they are by far the largest nature reserve in the UK.

They’re a haven for an enormous range of wildlife.
